Earthquake in Japan leads to the temporary closure of Sony’s image sensor plants

Electronic giant Sony Corp said on factory production of image sensors to Apple Inc and other smartphone manufacturers will remain closed until it assesses damage from the deadly earthquake that struck south of Japan.

Sony said it will extend the closure of its image sensor plant in Kumamoto, located in the southern part of the island of Kyushu, the main tremblors Thursday and Saturday shook the key industrial region.

Toyota Motor Corp suspended production at three factories producing cars, engines and trans-axles in Fukuoka. Toyota claims that there was no damage to factories, but it was to check the status of their suppliers. It decides on a Sunday or resume production.

Kumamoto Prefecture accounted for about 1.1 percent of Japan's GDP, compared with a combined 6.2 percent of the four prefectures that suffered the greatest damage from the disaster in 2011, according to Barclays strategists.

"The relatively high proportion of economic activity takes place in the region of Kyushu. Therefore, the economic impact on the rest of Japan, resulting from any damages Kyushu production activities will be limited," Barclays wrote in a note to clients.
